How do we know that Otto Abeling married Martha Hoffman?
So far, there is only one document that directly ties Otto to Martha. It is their oldest daughters death certificate for Bertha Abeling Dalton which states that her father is Otto Abeling and her mother is Martha Hoffman.
The following indicators also point towards Otto and Martha as being married...
1) The census records of the children indicate that the mother was born in Connecticut and that the father was a) a male with the last name of Abeling and b) born in Germany.
2) Following the census records, there are only 5 male Abeling's who were born in Germany that lived in Torrington, CT... Julius (who is too old to meet the description), and then his four sons - William, Herman, Charles, and Otto. Next, we use the process of elimination..... William, Herman, and Charles all have census records showing that they married other women and stayed as residents of Torrington, CT - which leaves us with Otto Abeling.
3) Otto Abeling does not have any census records available that show he was living with Martha and the children - however, there is a census record that shows he lived in Wilson, Utah in 1920. In addition, he died in Idaho in 1929, and is listed as a widow. Since the other Abeling boys stayed in Connecticut, Otto appears to be the son who moved west.
4) As teenagers, Martha Hoffman and Otto Abeling were neighbors. In the 1870 Census of Torrington, CT Martha and her family lived on the same street as Otto and his family - only 5 houses away from each other. Otto's father and Martha's brother likely worked at the same woolen mill, and Martha's other brother likely worked at the same skate shop as Otto's older brother.
5) Just a hunch, but several of Martha's children were involved in Mining related jobs - which most likely did not happen as a result of her families history from Torrington, CT. In all likelyhood, it was Otto who was the first in the family to be involved in mining related jobs and most likely passed this on to his children. In fact, the 1920 census shows that Otto was living alone in Wilson, Utah working as..... a Mining Engineer.
Putting all of the available dates together, here is a very possible timeline...
1869: Otto moves to Torrington, CT from Germany
1870 Census: As teenagers, Martha and Otto are neighbors in Torrington, CT, and several of their family members appear to work at the same locations.
1876/77: Probable marriage date, most likely in Torrington, CT
1877: Birth of their first child, Bertha
1879: Birth of their second child, Alice
1880 Census: Martha is living with her parents in Torrington CT, along with Bertha and Alice. Otto is not found anywhere in the 1880 census - why not? One possibility is that he was already heading west, possibly looking for a future location for the family? Or he went to pursue his own dream of heading west for mining- and had to convince his wife to eventually head west to join him?
1883: Birth of their third child, Chester, in Montana
1885: Birth of their fourth child, Howard in Montana
1890 Census: Not available, as it was burned in a fire
1894: Otto Abeling resided in Burke, Idaho according to US Patent Records.
1895: On Dec 24, Otto and Martha's oldest daughter, Bertha marries Michael Dalton in Moscow, Idaho.
1900 Census: Martha is living in Moscow, Idaho along with Bertha, Alice, Chester, and Howard. But again, Otto is not listed - however, again Martha is listed as Married, but Otto is not in the household at the time of the census.
1910 Census: All of their children are listed as married and/or living off on their own. However, Martha is living alone in Moscow, Idaho, and is now listed as divorced.
1913: Martha Hoffman Abeling dies in Idaho
1920 Census: Otto Abeling is listed as living alone (but listed as widow), working in Wilson, Utah as an Mining Engineer.
1929: Otto Abeling dies in Idaho. | Family: F1585

McCLENAHAN, AUGUSTUS
Among the prominent and successful farmers of Mills county, Iowa, who enjoys the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens must be named the subject of the present review, Augustus McClenahan, who resides upon section 11, Anderson township. He was born in Trader's Point, Iowa, August 18, 1848. He was the son of Robert McClenahan, who was born in Kentucky, in 1807, and died at Trader's Point, Iowa, on December 10, 1852. While still a very young man Robert McClenahan took up his residence in Stark county, Ohio, teaching school there, also in central Illinois, and after his removal to Iowa. In Ohio he made the acquaintance of, and married, Lucy A. Richards, of Stark county, a daughter of Augustus Richards and his wife, who belonged to the old Doggett family of Virginia Mr. and Mrs. McClenahan came to Iowa in 1846 and were among the very first settlers of Mills county, where they reared their family: Mary Ellen, the wife of Daniel Hougas; Frances Elizabeth, the wife of G. P. Schenck, of Montgomery county; and our subject. The father lived until death at Trader's Point, after which the mother married Jeremiah Bunker and bore him one daughter, now Mrs. Gifford, a resident of Carson, Iowa. Mr. Bunker died in Nebraska, and she survived many years, passing away in June 1897.
Brought up on a farm and accustomed to agriculture, our subject has made a success of his life work. His educational advantages, like those of many others of his day, were limited but native good sense and a sterling character have supplied all deficiencies. It was on the 23d of October, 1872, that he was married to Miss Mary I Schenck, a native of Indiana, who was born in 1850 and was a daughter of James M. and Alzina (Fisher) Schenck, both of whom are deceased.
Our subject remained on the farm where his mother had settled in 1855, also becoming the possessor of a land warrant of eighty acres from his grandfather Richards, who had been a soldier of the war of 1812. He now has a finely stocked and well cultivated farm of three hundred and twenty-six acres with eight acres of timber land additional. He raises corn, wheat, oats, but principally corn, some years harvesting from six to eight thousand bushels in all. He also raises Poland China hogs and breeds colts, and owns some twenty horses.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. McClenahan have grown up around their hearth to be the comfort of their declining years. The oldest child was an infant that died when but five months old; Maud is the wife of R. E. Stone and has a little son, Sylvan; Pearl May is a teacher and lives at home; Robert Vernon and Lucy Edna, twins, are eighteen years old and live at home; Edna is a graduate of the Henderson high school; Ralph W.; and Inez, a bright little ten year old school girl. Pearl May was graduated at Shenandoah College and taught her first term of school in the Henderson high school, remaining a year. She is accomplished in music, and the musical talent seems to have been given to the whole family.
As a Republican Mr. McClenahan has always done his whole political duty, and his neighbors have honored him with their confidence, appointing him school director for twenty-five years. He was made treasurer before he was twenty-one years old.
Few homes are more happily placed than that of our genial subject and his excellent wife. Generous and liberal-minded, Mr. McClenahan makes friends in every direction, and is much interested in making his children happy by providing them with educational advantages. A new library is being added to the other comforts of the home.

Notes on Newbury Close III
Newbury Close, 3rd's gravestone
Hi - Here is a photo of Newbury Close, 3rd's gravestone in the Veteran's area of Oak Hill Cemetery out in Red Bluff, CA. I made contact with some folks that went to the cemetery and took some pictures and looked up some Census info as well.
They talked to the people at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Red Bluff said Lodema Cynthia Gibson Payne Close is buried there but that it would almost impossible to locate Lodema C. Close's grave because there isn't any headstone. More coming in next email. Sally Meabon
The youngest daughter of Newbury's, by Lucy Caroline Lockwood is Cora May Close, she married a Sardis D. WIlcox. She was Grandpa Burton’s sister, half sister to Archie Close. She is also buried out there as is her husband and other family members. They did say that in the Wilcox plot there are areas large enough for graves and no markers, so it is possible Lodema Cynthia is buried in this plot. In the 1910 Census for Red Bluff, Lodema (as a widow)age 71, is found living with Sardis (he was a widower)age 59, he was head of the household and a niece, Emma (?writing not clear) Gunderman age 19, was also living there. Cora Close & Sardis Wilcox had at least 1 daughter, Emogene. There is just a flat stone with Emogene on it in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Red Bluff. The plot has Emogene, Cora ???? Sardis ???? . 2 graves with no markers, but also a large monument. with Cora May & Sardis D. Wilcox on one side.
The Turners from Corning, CA, that have done all this for me, say north of Red Bluff there is a Wilcox Road as well as a Wilcox Golf Course & one of the Census record indicate that Sardis Wilcox raises sheep. They also wrote that Sardis Wilcox lived on a street that has restored Victorian Homes today. Since they have the address they will check the next time they are down to see if the house is still there and take a picture. The Turners have been wonderful help.
