- BROADALBIN - Stanley Peters, 81, formerly of Union Mills Road, died Wednesday, February 25, 2004, at his daughter's home in Dearborn Heights, MI.
He was born in Troy on October 25, 1922, a son of Joseph and Anna Pietrun Piniaha and was a graduate of Troy High School. Mr. Peters later earned an Associate's degree from the State University of New York.
He had resided in the Utica area for several years and, along with his wife, owned and operated the Old Bank Tavern in Barneveld.
Mr. Peters was also employed by General Electric Co. for over 25 years.
He had resided in Broadalbin since 1985, having recently moved to Michigan.
Mr. Peters was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Broadalbin. He was a World War II Navy veteran.
On June 30, 1949, he married Ann Barna Peters. She died August 16, 1991.
Survivors include a son, Joseph Peters of Milbert, AZ; a daughter, Jacqueline Nasser; five grandchildren, Lisa, Audey, Adnan, Amira, and Jeanine; two great-granddaughters, Sheridan and Sophia, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home, Inc., 38 West Main St., Broadalbin, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 7 North St., with the Rev. Robert Powhida officiating.
Spring burial will be in St. Basil's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may be made to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
- Last name changed to PETERS from Piniaha.
We are unsure of exactly when or why - but we believe that Stanley changed his last name to Peters sometime between 1949 and 1951.
As for why, the only recollection that has been sent it by family members is the following: "I heard that he changed his name because he was wanting to get into radio, and he needed a more common name". I have no idea if this is true - but I will post it since I have nothing else to offer... brian abeling
